Argo Floats Deployed by the Hydrographic Institute Collect Environmental Data in the Azores Region

As part of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Portuguese Hydrographic Institute (IH) and the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the IH, in collaboration with the Portuguese Navy, deployed four Argo floats off the coast of the Azores in April 2025.

The floats, launched from the Offshore Patrol Vessel Setúbal, are equipped with sensors that measure temperature, salinity, and pressure at depths of up to 2000 meters. The data collected is freely accessible and can be viewed at: https://fleetmonitoring.euro-argo.eu/dashboard

These floats contribute to the International Argo Programme and are part of a network of over 4,000 autonomous instruments that monitor the global ocean.

Through this initiative, the Hydrographic Institute is supporting global efforts to observe and monitor the ocean, helping to better understand and protect it.
