The Navy has a new “Meteorological and Naval Oceanographic Center”

In recent years, the Hydrographic Institute (HI), an organic unit of the Navy, has developed advanced valences in the field of meteo-oceanographic forecasting, having built observation networks across the coast and developed an advanced operational forecasting system. These valences have now been concentrated in the new Naval Meteorological and Oceanographic Centre (CMETOC), located within the Hydrographic Institute facilities and the dependence of its Director-General.

This center, operated by 14 people distributed across 4 thematic areas (Oceanography, Meteorology, Geospatial Information and Minas War), will produce information of meteo-oceanographic prediction fundamental to support the modern operations of the Navy and the National Maritime Authority.

Among the products are the most generic ones related to the forecast of the state of the sea, at different scales, places and depths, up to the diagrams of impact on the ongoing mission, depending on the means employed. The citizen who uses the sea will also benefit from this center because some of the forecast products will be made available through the Hydrographic Institute portal at www.hydrographico. pt.
