60th Anniversary Commemorative Session of the Hydrographic Institute - 2020
Today, September 22, 2020, at 11 a.m., was held the Commemorative Session of the 60th Anniversary of the Hydrographic Institute, chaired by the Minister of National Defense (MDN), Prof. Dr. João Gomes Cravinho and also attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), Dr. Manuel Heitor and the Minister of the Sea (MMar), Professor Ricardo Serrão Santos and distinguished guests.
This commemorative day featured a Lecture on “Hydrography in the Navy – 200 years of History” and the inauguration of an exhibition dedicated to the “Missions of Portuguese Hydrography in the 20th century” in order to mark the 60 years of its creation, on 22 September 1960, through Decree No.43 177, where it was highlighted the need to centralize the national services of hydrography, physical oceanography and navigation, dispersed by the Ministry of the Navy and Ministry of Overseas, aiming to ensure unity of guidance, terminology and methods in the technical field and applications.
The Hydrographic Institute is a Navy and State Laboratory, endowed with administrative and financial autonomy, which operates in the direct dependence of the Chief of Staff of the Armada.
Under the supervision of the MDN in conjunction with the MCTES and the MMar, they remain as a reference in the research, ensuring the activities related to the sciences of the sea, with a view not only to its application in the military area but also to contribute to the development of the country in the scientific and defense areas of the marine environment, focusing mainly on the knowledge of the Ocean so that everyone can use it.
