Quality Management System

The Hydrographic Institute (IH) maintains a firm commitment to quality, scientific rigour and continuous improvement of its products and services. This commitment is supported by a consolidated Quality Management System in full compliance with the requirements of NP EN ISO 9001:2015 and NP EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 standards.

NP EN ISO 9001:2015 Certification

Since 2007, the IH Quality Management System has been certified and recognised by an independent external entity, according to the standard NP EN ISO 9001:2015 is implemented in the collection, processing and validation of top-hydrographic and oceanographic data, and the dissemination of information, production of nautical documents and provision of services in the field of navigation security.

The certification shall confirm the ability of the HI to carry out its mission, developing and providing high quality products and services, responding consistently and effectively to the needs of stakeholders.

NP EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 Accreditation

Since 2011, the IH laboratories have been accredited by Portuguese Institute of Accreditation (IPAC), in accordance with the standard NP EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018.

Accreditation confirms technical competence the HI for testing and calibration with accuracy, impartiality and reliability, covering the following laboratories:

  • Laboratory of Marine Chemistry and Pollution;
  • Laboratory of Sedimentology;
  • Laboratory of Calibration.

Designated Institute in Inorganic Chemistry Metrology

O Laboratory of Chemistry and Pollution of the Marine Environment (IH-LQPM) has been designated by Portuguese Quality Institute (IPQ) how Office Designated for Inorganic Chemistry. This designation, recognised at international level by BIPM and EURAMET since 2019, shall cover:

  • Determination of silica in sea water
  • Determination of mercury in sediments

This status reinforces the role of HI as a national reference in chemical metrology applied to the marine environment, consolidating its scientific and institutional relevance at national and international level.
