Data Infrastructure
The development of the Geospatial Data Infrastructure on the Marine Environment (IDAMAR) is a program of the Hydrographic Institute (IH) that aims to store and provide technical-scientific data and information from the ocean.
The importance of marine technical and scientific data was recognized early by the HI:
- In 1988, an internal program was developed to build the Oceanographic Data Center (CDO);
- In 1996, the Technical Directorate (DT) established the Technical and Scientific Data Management Centre (CDT), with the aim of developing an information system for the management of geospatial data, called the Marine Environment Geographic Information System (SIGAMAR);
- In 2004, due to developments in geospatial information management, SIGAMAR developed into Geospatial Data Infrastructure on the Marine Environment (IDAMAR);
- In 2018, following an organic DT change, the CDT gave rise to the Geographic Information Systems Office (GIS);
- In 2020, the CSD was reestablished as a DT division.
The current marine geospatial data infrastructure (MSDI) of the IH, called Hydrographic+ is managed by the CSD, reflects this evolution.
