The Hydrographic Institute
The Hydrographic Institute (IH), an organ of the Portuguese Navy, was created by Decree-Law No 43177 of 22 September 1960.
The Hydrographic Institute (IH), an organ of the Portuguese Navy, was created by Decree-Law No 43177 of 22 September 1960. The IH operates in direct dependence on the Admiral Chief of the Armada's Staff, being the competence regarding the definition of strategic guidelines, as well as the monitoring of its implementation, exercised by the Minister of National Defense in conjunction with the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education and the Minister of the Sea. The IH is recognized as State Laboratory, enjoying administrative and financial autonomy.
Mission
The fundamental mission of the IH is to ensure activities related to the sciences and techniques of the sea, with a view to their application in the military area, and to contribute to the development of the country in the scientific and defense areas of the marine environment.
