The Director-General of the Hydrographic Institute
The Director-General shall be responsible for managing the overall activity of the Hydrographic Institute.
The Director-General of the Instituto Hidrográfico is the body responsible for managing the overall activity of the IH.
Currently the post is held by Rear Admiral João Paulo Ramalho Marreiros.
The Director-General shall be responsible for:
- direct and coordinate technical and scientific operational services and technical, administrative and financial support services;
- ensure the representation of the country in the international organizations of the specialty;
- ensure national coordination of warnings to seafarers;
- exclusively authorise the issue, promulgation and cancellation of nautical letters and other national nautical documents of territorial waters and others with national cartographic interest;
- chair the Scientific and Technical Council and the Administrative Council;
- ensure that opinions are issued within the remit of the HI.
The Director-General shall have a technical authority over all Navy bodies in the fields of hydrographic surveys and nautical cartography and, where applicable, navigation safety, navigation methods and material, physical oceanography, marine geology and chemical oceanography.
For naval units, the Director-General shall lay down the Directives on technical aspects of the implementation of the missions of naval units placed in their subordination.
