Aquasado

Promoting sustainable AQUAculture in the SADO estuary

The overall objective of the project is to evaluate the environmental quality of the Sado Estuary, from an integrating perspective and to the ecosystem scale, promoting the use of the natural element, estuarine microalgae, as a source of food in the sustainable production of bivalves, including the Portuguese oyster (Crassosstrea angulata) and other species with potential for production.

In addition to in-situ measurements of environmental and biological parameters, the project also provides for the use of innovative tools (e.g. satellite images and biosensors) for the characterization and monitoring of both the quality of the environment and the bivalves, in order to obtain an integrated view, at estuary level, that enables the optimization of natural resources, promoting innovation in aquaculture activities.
