PlasticTrace
The PlasticTrace project - Methodological traceability of measurement data from nano- to small-microplastics for a greener environment and food safety - aims to satisfy the urgent need for development and harmonisation of methods for the chemical identification, physical characterization and quantification of small micro/nanoplastics (SMPs/NPs) released into drinking water, food and environment, as required by the European Union's Action Plan for the Circular Economy.
The main objective of this project is to develop international metrological capacity to allow the measurement and characterization of traceable SMPs and NPs in environmental and food samples, as well as the production of appropriate reference materials, according to metrological requirements.
In this context, PlasticTrace will create methods to measure and characterize SMPs/NPs, considering composition, size distribution and morphology, and will produce appropriate and realistic reference materials. It will also develop sample preparation methods and create a good practice guide to measure and characterize SMPs/NPs in food and the environment. This infrastructure will enable traceable monitoring of SMPs/NPs, supporting decision-making and mitigation measures in relation to plastic pollution. It will also support future technologies, such as biodegradable bioplastics, and improvements in the health impacts of industries such as food packaging and water management.
