MONIZEE
Operational monitoring and forecasting system for the Portuguese coastal ocean.
The Hydrographic Institute (IH) maintains a real-time monitoring capability of oceanographic conditions along the Portuguese coast through the MONIZEE infrastructure.
At present, this observation network includes tide gauge stations, wave buoys, high-frequency coastal radars, and multi-parameter buoys, distributed across mainland Portugal and the national archipelagos. These systems are integrated into global monitoring networks.
The MONIZEE programme collects fundamental measurements that support the monitoring and understanding of transport mechanisms along the Portuguese continental margin, as well as the interaction processes between the coastal and open ocean.
The observation sites located near the coast provide essential data for understanding coastal circulation and processes in these areas.
This national infrastructure also contributes to the European coastal observation network JERICO-RI (Joint European Research Infrastructure for Coastal Observatories).
The IH has developed a data infrastructure, Hidrografico+ (H+), which enables the exploration of different types of geospatial data, including those acquired under the MONIZEE programme.
These datasets can be downloaded or visualised through the Geoportal at https://geomar.hidrografico.pt/ or via the mobile application.
The IH also provides the public with a set of forecast products under the title “Qual é a tua Onda?” (What’s Your Wave?).
