HAZARDOUS
Title: Risk assessment associated with the formation and evolution of detritic and lavic fajãs in the Portuguese volcanic archipelagos
Funding: PTDC/CTA-GEO/0798/2020, funded by FCT
Project Coordinator: Rui Quartau
Address: rui.quartau@hidrografico.pt
Scientific Coordinator: Rui Quartau
Objectives: The project HAZARDOUS aims to study of the evolution of three fajãs in the Azores Archipelago: the lava fajã of Vila do Corvo on Corvo Island, the Fajã Grande on Flores Island, and the Fajã de Santo Cristo on São Jorge Island. The assessment of their evolution will be based on the following methodologies:
- Subaerial domain: analysis of aerial photographs from different periods and a present-day survey using drones.
- Submarine domain: multibeam bathymetric survey, seismic reflection profiling, and sediment sampling.
- Evolution modeling: after reconstructing the historical evolution, coastal erosion will be simulated using a numerical model to replicate the described changes and predict future trends. For the detrital fajãs, the volume involved in the landslide will also be estimated, along with modeling of potential tsunami generation.
