EMODNET CHEMISTRY
Phase 6 initiated
The EMODnet Chemistry project began in 2009 with its Pilot Phase, limited to a limited number of parameters and geographical areas. The Hydrographic Institute joined the project in 2012, with the beginning of Phase 2, when several geographical areas and chemical parameters were covered. The project is currently at the end of Phase 5, with Phase 6 starting in 2025.
Since 2012, six major European maritime regions have been covered: Arctic Ocean, Baltic Sea, Northeast Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea, focusing on four major thematic areas: Eutrophication, Oceanic Acidification, Contaminants and Marine Trash.
The main objective of EMODnet Chemistry is to collect and validate chemical data on the state of the seas and oceans, make them available free of charge and interoperable, managing heterogeneity, complexity, quality and large volume of observational data sets on sea water quality, biota contamination, sediment quality and potential pollution. Thus, the EMODnet Chemistry project generates and publishes standardized, harmonised and quality-controlled data sets in addition to reliable derived data products. All these data are relevant for the implementation of the EU marine policies such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (FD), the Water Framework Directive and the Maritime Space Planning Directive. Specifically, the EMODnet Chemistry contributes to the Descriptors 5 (eutrophication), 8 (chemical pollution), 9 (contaminants in shellfish) and 10 (marine waste) of DQEM.
I, Horizon Europe
Currently, the IH has its responsibility the development of scientific project and cruise forms as well as the submission of data, validated and with quality control, obtained under monitoring programs that it coordinates or participates in.
