Building of the Naval Meteorological and Oceanographic Centre (CMETOC)

Weather and oceanographic support (METOC) is recognised as a key element in naval and maritime operations.

In recent years, the Hydrographic Institute (HI) has developed valences in the field of meteo-oceanographic prediction through the construction of observation and data collection networks, as well as the implementation of operational forecasting systems supported in complex mathematical models.

By order, SEXA the Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy and National Maritime Authority determined the establishment of a working group with the aim of transforming the valencias mentioned into a functional capacity of the Navy, in order to ensure METOC support for naval and maritime operations in a sustained manner, through the creation of a Marine Meteorological and Oceanographic Centre (CMETOC), depending on the Rear Admiral Director-General of the IH.

Navy and IH budget.

It is considered that the settlement was completed, having completed the building phase on October 12, 2017.

Elements from the IH have been provisionally moved to the CMETOC so that meteo-oceanographic, civil and military (MET-COMIL) forecast products can continue to be produced and disseminated.

The CMETOC is built and is able to start operating.
