World Meteorology Day

On World Meteorology Day, we remember the importance of weather forecasting and its significance for our operational community.

Meteorology is crucial for the safety, effectiveness, and planning of missions at sea. The success of naval operations starts with environmental forecasting, allowing our forces to make informed decisions to ensure navigation safety and operational effectiveness.

The Maritime Geospatial Meteorological and Oceanographic Center (CGEOMETOC), from the Hydrographic Institute (IH), ensures the collection, analysis, and provision of meteorological, geospatial, and oceanographic information, directly supporting the Portuguese Navy and the Directorate-General for Maritime Authority in the planning and execution of maritime operations and military exercises.

In addition to providing high-resolution weather forecasts, CGEOMETOC plays a key role in assessing the environmental impact on military operations. Its specialists translate complex meteorological data into tactical and strategic information, enabling the Navy and other operational forces to make faster and more accurate decisions, thus ensuring an operational advantage.

This support extends to joint and international operations, contributing to global maritime security. With access to high-resolution forecasting models, our forces have access to essential environmental information for the effective use of ships, aircraft, and sensor and weapon systems in any operational theater.
