4th Luso-Spanish Hydrography Conference reinforces scientific and technical cooperation in ocean knowledge

The 4th Luso-Spanish Hydrography Conference, organized by the Hydrographic Institute (IH) and the Instituto Hidrográfica de la Marina of the Spanish Navy, took place at the IH facilities between June 24th and 26th, 2026.

Over three days, the Conference brought together around 145 participants from 11 countries, featuring the presentation of 81 scientific papers distributed across 14 thematic areas.

The works presented highlighted the role of hydrography and marine sciences in navigational safety, nautical charting, oceanography, marine geology, marine environmental chemistry, underwater archaeology, the blue economy, marine technologies, and marine geospatial data infrastructures. Key highlighted topics included the use of autonomous vehicles, satellite-derived bathymetry, the implementation of the International Hydrographic Organization's S-100 standard, oceanographic monitoring, artificial intelligence, and digital twins.

The Conference constituted an important space for knowledge sharing, technical-scientific debate, and the strengthening of cooperation between Portugal and Spain, contributing to generating more and better knowledge about the marine environment.

The Hydrographic Institute thanks all participants, speakers, moderators, members of the scientific committee, and all military and civilian personnel who contributed to the success of this initiative.

The next Luso-Spanish Hydrography Conference will be held in 2028, in Cadiz, Spain.
